Abstract: Gymnosporangium tianschanicum sp. nov. on Sabina vulgaris from Hami, Xinjiang Autonomous
Region in northwest of China is described. The species is quite easily recognized by the presence of uredinial
stage, and the unicellular teliospores occasionally intermixed with urediniospores in the uredinia.

A new species of the genus Gymnosporangium (Uredinales) occurring upon twigs of Sabina
vulgaris Antoine (Cupressaceae) from Xinjiang Autonomous Region of northwestern China is
reported in this paper. The rust is distinctive that the uredinia and urediniospores are present, and a
few of teliospores occasionally intermixed with urediniospores in the uredinia are unicellular. The
infected twigs of the host plant are deformed and enlarged, forming globoid galls on which the
pulvinate and somewhat pulverulent sori of the rust occur. No inoculation experiment was made and
the life cycle of the rust was still unknown, but it was probable that the infection was
juniper-to-juniper without alternation of hosts. Because of the unique morphological characteristics, it

obovoideae, 20~28(~33)×15~20μm, membrana 1.5~2μm crassa, subtilissime densiuscule verruculosa,

Uredinia ramicolous, on globoid gall-like excrescences of young twigs up to 5mm diam. or
larger, pulvinate, confluent, often cover the whole or a great part of the gall surface, somewhat
pulverulent, chestnut-brown; urediniospores globoid, ellipsoid or obovoid, 20~28(~33) × 15~20μm,
wall 1.5~2μm thick, finely verruculose,
cinnamon-brown or yellowish-brown, pores 6~10,
with broad illdefined colourless caps, pedicels very
long, up to 125μm or longer, colourless.
Telia not seen; teliospores occasional in the
uredinia 1-celled, mostly ellipsoid or obovoid,
rounded at both ends or slightly narrowed below,
22~35×15~23μm, wall 1~1.5(~2)μm thick,
pale-yellow or brownish, smooth, pores 2, apical and
basal, pedicels not seen, probably dissolved.

Three species of Gymnosporangium, G. nootkatense Arthur (1916) from North America, G.
paraphysatum Viennot-Bourgin (1960) from Vietnam, and G. gaeumannii H. Zogg (1949, see also
Gäumann, 1959) from Eurasia and North America, were known to have uredinial stage. The
teliospores of these species are often 2-celled except that in G. paraphysatum the normal 2-celled
teliospores are sometimes accompanied by 3- or 4-celled ones. Our species is a remarkably
distinctive one because of its uniformly 1-celled teliospores. The only previous known species of the
genus Gymnosporangium having uniformly 1-celled teliospores is G. tsingchenensis C.T. Wei (1947,
see also Tai, 1979) on Cupressus funebris Endl. from Sichuan Province of southwestern China.
Because of its much larger teliospores (34.6~59.4 × 24.7~31.3μm according to the original
description), it is clearly distinguished from our new species.
