Xinjiang , si tuated in the middle of Eurasian ( Europe-Asia) continent , i s a v ery dry region, w hich is
influenced bo th by cold and humid current and the dry anticyclone f rom Siberia and M ongolia. Altai M ts
is one of the g rea t co rdillera in Asia and i ts middle part is lo cated in China and faced to southw est be-
tw een 85-92 E longi tude and 46-50 N lati tude.
This region consists of the souther n part o f Altai M t. In Xinjiang. Various kinds o f v egeta tion oc-
cur in this region f rom the foo thi ll to the top of the mountain. These include steppe, coni ferous fo rests,
alpine shrub, and alpine meadow. Th e climate in the reg ion is the moistest in Xinjiang , thus, the region
is rich in bry ophy te species. The bryof lo ra here is closely rela ted to tha t of no rthern Europe, Siberia,
and that o f Tianshan M t.
In recent years, a series moss lists of Xinjiang have been published by Zhao J. - C. et al. ( 1989,
1993) [1, 2 ] , Tan et al. ( 1995)
[3 ]
and Sulayman et al. ( 2004, 2005)
[4, 5, 6, 7 ] . As w ell , sev eral new distribut-
ed species w ere found in Kanas, which is rich in vertical distribution.
In this paper, w e try to int roduce Coscinodon cribrosus ( Hedw. ) Spruce, w hich w as once found in
Burqin County and ano ther col lection w as in Fuyun County o f Al tai Range. Bo th of them and their g enus
a re firstly recorded in No rthw est China.
Acco rding to the bryological taxonomical history , Coscinodon cribrosus ( Hedw. ) Spruce is a v ery old
species, which was named by Hedwig in the“ Species Muscorum” in l801. How ever it s peristome teeth
a re very peculiar and a re perforated like a siev e, therefore theCoscinodon was named in l804 ( Cro sby et
al. 1999)
