A new subspecies of Primula obconica Hance
from Eastern China

Abstract　A new subspecies , Primula obconica subsp.fujianensis , is described.The genus
Primula is widely distributed throughout China , but it has never been previously recorded in Fujian
and Jiangsu.Recently the authors collected a specimen of the genus from Fujian for the first time.It
is obviously closely related to P.obconica , which is one of the most common species in China ,
ranging from western Yunnan and Sichuan through Guizhou , Hubei to Hunan and northern Guang-
dong , with its most easterly extension in southern Jiangxi.Morphologically , the Fujian plant is char-
acterized by its much smaller stature and by the scapes being shorter than the leaf rosette , and in
many ways it is more closely related to P .obconica subsp.parva , but can be easily distinguished
by its smaller , white and homostylous flowers.As it is isolated both in distribution and reproduction
with other subspecies of P.obconica , here it is described as a new subspecies.

采得此属标本 ,其体态极小 ,高不及 6 cm , 花葶短于叶丛 , 甚为特殊 ,但无疑与鄂报春
Primula obconica 有密切的亲缘关系;其外形与小型鄂报春 P.obconica subsp.parva 尤为
相似 , 但花更小 ,白色 ,花同型(花柱更长),可以区别 ,其地理分布和生殖也与鄂报春其他
亚种存在明显的隔离 ,因此作一新亚种发表。

Differt a subsp.obconica Hance statura minore , vix ultra 6 cm alta , scapo foliis breviore vel
ea aequanti;a P.obconica Hance subsp.parva (Balf.f.)W.W.Smith &Forr.differt floribus
homogeneis , et multo minoribus , corollis albis , tantum 8 ～ 10 mm diam.
A small perennial herb with a slender rhizome covered with withered bases of old leaves.Leav-
es in a rosette;petiole 1.5 ～ 2.5 cm long , usually purplish , rusty pubescent , ±vaginate at base;
leaf blade broadly ovate to suborbicular , (2 ～ 4)×(1.5 ～ 3.8)cm , apex rounded , base shallowly
cordate , margin irregularly dentate , pubescent on both surfaces.Scapes usually shorter than leaf ro-
sette , 0.8 ～ 3.7 cm , lengthening to 4 ～ 8 cm in fruiting time;umbels 3 ～ 4_flowered;bracts 3 ～ 4 ,

fruiting time.Calyx campanulate , c.3 mm long , enlarged to 7 mm in fruit , puberulent , parted to
1 4 ～ 1 3;lobes broadly ovate_triangular.Corolla white;tube 5 ～ 7 mm long;limb 8 ～ 10 mm
wide;lobes oblong_obovate , emarginated.Stamens inserted near apex of corolla_tube;style c.4
mm long , reaching stamens.Capsule globose , c.3mm in diameter , included in calyx_tube.Flow-
ering April to May.
China.Fujian(福建):Nanping(南平), Yanping(延平), Mangdang Mt.(茫荡山).On
shaded wet cliffs in forests of valleys , alt.700m , 2000_05_02 , G.S.He(何国生)20001(holo-
type , here designated , IBSC);known only from the type locality.
