ABSTRACT: A new species, Cercospora meliosmae, on Meliosma sp. is reported. Latin diagnosis, illustration and
English description of the new species are provided. The type specimen is deposited in HMAS.
KEY WORDS: Cercospora, C. meliosmae, new species
Cercospora meliosmae Y. L. Guo & L. Xu, sp. nov. Fig.1
Maculae amphigenae, orbiculares, suborbiculares vel irregulares, 3~10 mm diam., griseo-albae, griseae
vel luteo-brunneae. Caespituli amphigeni. Stromata parva. Conidiophora 2~12 laxe fasciculata,
olivaceo-brunnea vel pallide brunnea, erecta vel curvata, 1~6-geniculata, non ramosa, 0~4-septata,

gray to yellowish brown, margin surrounded by a dark line, or with wider blackish brown margin, with pale
reddish brown halo on the upper surface, center pale gray, yellowish brown to brown, margin dark brown or
the whole spot brown, with yellowish brown halo on the lower surface. Fruiting amphigenous. Stromata
small or only a few brown globose cells. Conidiophores 2~12 loosely fasciculate, olivaceous brown to pale
brown, paler towards the apex, irregular in width, not branched, straight to curved, 1~6-geniculate,
subtruncate at the apex, 0~4-septate, 43.8~130.5 × 3.8~6.3 mm. Conidial scars conspicuously thickened,
1.5~2.5 mm wide. Conidia acicular, hyaline, straight to curved, apex acute to subobtuse, base truncate,
indistinctly multiseptate, 37.5~145 × 2.5~5 mm.
This fungus is the first report of a species of Cercospora on Sabiaceae.
This species differs from Pseudocercospora sabiae Y. L. Guo & W. X. Zhao (1989) on Sabia sp. in
Sabiaceae because the latter has external hyphae, narrower conidiophores (15~162 × 3.2~4.3 mm.),
indistinct conidial scars, and obclavate to cylindrical, pale olivaceous conidia.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS We are greatly indebted to Prof. G. S. Zhou for identification of host plant and to
Ms. X. F. Zhu for inking the line drawing.
