Introduction
Hainan Island lies in the South China Sea and
comprises 33 , 900 square kilometers.It is adjacent
to the Leizhou Peninsula of China and the Indochina
Peninsula. The island is very rich in pteridophy tes ,
especially in t ropical elements. The total pteridoflora
recorded in Flora of Hainan[ 1] consists of 354 species
and 8 varieties in 114 genera and 43 families.Later ,
Xing and Li
[ 2 ~ 7]
recorded additional 48 species of
pteridophy tes to this f lo ra;Chu and Zhou[ 8] added
29 species in 1994.Yang[ 9〗, Zhang and Shi[ 10〗,

haea hainanensis , Aleuritopteris humati fol ia , Mi-
crosorum hainanense f rom Hainan.
In o rder to more clearly understand the pterido-
phy te flora of Hainan Island , we examined the iden-
tification of all the fern and fern-allied collections
from this island in herbaria PE , PYU and IBSC and
made field explo rations.Fif teen recent collections
represent new reco rds for Hainan.Among these ,
three species , Selaginella braunii , Aleuritopteris
squamosa and Asplenium sampsoni i are endemic to
southern and southw estern China , seven species ,
Selaginel la repanda , Botrychium dauci folium ,
Lygodium subareolatum , Lindsaea javanensis ,
Pteris longipes , Pteris longipinnula and Loxo-
gramme assim il is are tropical elements with distri-
bution(s)ranging f rom southern China to Indochina
and M alay sia , the remaining f ive species are
w idespread in East Asia and are very common in
subtropical and tropical regions of China. These ad-
di tions bring the total number of pteridophytes
known from Hainan Island to some 450 taxa.
The follow ing enumeration is alphabetically
listed. All voucher specimens are in PE.

Aleuri topteris squamosa is unique in Aleuri-
topteris Fée in having dense , broadly-lanceolate
scales on the low er surface of lamina.Previously i t
has only been recorded from a dry-hot valley in cen-
tral Yunnan Province.Because of the special habi tat
and the very limi ted dist ribution , this rare species is
critically endangered.
