Herba perennis leviter caespitosa , intra emarcidam vaginulam ramificans.Culmi rigidi glabri
erecti , 20 ～ 45 cm alti , basi 1 ～ 1.5 mm diam., 2 ～ 3-nodi.Vaginulae cinereo-brunneae , emarci-
dae persistentes;vaginae caulinae glabrae , superiores internodiis breviores , aliquando summae pan-

Bulate branch-valley (布拉特沟), on grassland of hillside , alt.2800 m , 1998-08-17 , M.Peng ,
G.C.Chen et al.(彭敏 ,陈桂琛等)PCCZ-T175(holotype , here designated , HNWP).
In small tufts with several culms and a little short-shoot , 20 ～ 45 cm tall , branching intravagi-
nal.Culms base 1 ～ 1.5 mm in diameter , with persistent gray brown withered sheaths , rigid ,
glabrous , erect , 2 ～ 3-noded.Sheaths glabrous , the upper ones shorter than internodes , sometimes
the uppermost covered by panicle.Ligules thick membranous , about 0.5 mm long , apex obtuse ,
margin gnawed or torn , ciliolate.Blades usually involute , rigid , roughish , 3 ～ 9 cm long and up to
ca.0.5mm broad , glabrous.Panicle 6 ～ 7 cm long and 1 ～ 1.5 cm broad , narrowed and contract-
ed , with 1(2)branch in each node , usually one-sided.Branches erect , sometimes base ascending ,
up to 3.5 cm long , setulose or rough , with 1 ～ 4 spikelets.Spikelets 12 ～ 14 mm long , yellow-
brown with 1 flower.Pedicels 2.5 ～ 5.5 mm long , setulose or rough.Glumes equal somewhat ,
back rough , long lanceolate or lanceolate , thick papery with purple-brown margin and apex , 5-
nerved , veins absent near the apex , apex acuminate , 13 ～ 14 cm long.Lemma slightly shorter than
glumes , papery , about 10 mm long , back diffuse with about 2 mm long hairs , apex cut to 1/3 of
lemma with 2 awned teeth , 5-nerved , lateral veins up to the apex , sometimes lateral veins becoming
2 points at the tip , costa expanded into a long awn.Awn borne at about 3.5 mm from the base in
the back of lemma , about 10 mm long , geniculate near the medium , the lower part twisted , rough ,
upward the tip becoming roughish.Palea slightly shorter than lemma , about 7 mm long , 2-nerved ,
pilose on ridges , glabrous between the ridges.Anthers linear , ca.1.2mm long , yellow.Lodicules
linear-lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate , ca.1 mm long.Caryopsis oblong or long ellipsoid , about 4
mm long , glabrous.Fl.Jun.-Aug.Fr.Aug.-Sept.
This is a distinctive species , easily recognized by having bigger spikelets (12 ～ 14 mm long)
and glumes and lemma 5-nerved , having no robust flagelliform rhizome covered by withered persis-
tent squamiform leaves and by having anthers c.1.2 mm long , awn geniculate in medium , with the
lower part twisted.
In Fl.Reip.Pop.Sin.Vol.9(3)(p.316 ～ 319), only two species were recorded in the
genus Trikeraia Bor., i.e.T.hookeri and T .pappiformis.Both species occur only in the Qing-
hai-Xizang Plateau and thus Trikeraia was considered to be an endemic genus to this region.Our
new species differs from them in morphology and geographical distribution as well , and represents
the first record of this genus out of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.
