Abstract:This paper studied the spatial distribution of the nature reserves in Beijing by using ArcGIS software and vectorization of target reserves′ boundary. Based on the relative locations the nature reserves were represented as patches in the digital map. In addition Fragstats software was used to calculate the Aggregation index, from which the concept of “three zones” was proposed, i.e. the total reserves were aggregated into three protected zones. The rationality of the three zones was evaluated by calculating the Mean Nearest Neighbor Distance between different nature reserves. Meanwhile the land use structure was identified between each pairs of the three zones based on the compartment data of forestry inventory. Finally this paper proposed two corridors, one for the mountains in the west and another for water area in the east, to connect each pair of the three zones. From the above we propose the concept of “Three Zones / Two Corridors” to cover the spatial distribution of the nature reserves in Beijing.
