摘 要 ：我国西北部的荒漠,均属温带荒漠,它分布的地区,包括准噶尔盆地、塔里木盆地、柴达木盆地、阿拉善高原和鄂尔多斯台地的西缘,面积占全国五分之一,地域十分辽阔。这里少雨,气候极其干旱,风多而且强劲,加强了地面蒸发,促进了旱化;这里虽然太阳总幅射量大,光热资源丰富,但年较差和日较差大,冷热变化剧烈。在这种严酷的自然条件下,由适应最干旱的植物组成的植物群落是极其稀疏的,在维持一种极其脆弱的生态平衡中,它们起着极其艰难的稳定作用。这样，就在一个广漠的地区，出现生机受到抑制，生产力极低，国际上称为“偏僻地区”（marginal land）的急待研究的现代生态学的一个前沿。

Abstract:This paper reviews the past development of research work on plant ecology in the arid land of China. Some subjects with general interest, such as the developmental history of vegetation, the origin of flora of this area, the aridity of the region, and the geographical divisions of different vegetation regions are discussed. Some suggestions for further studies of plant ecology in the arid land of China are also made in this paper.
