Abstract:Manglietia aromatica var. calcarea (X. H. Song)Sima et S. G. Lu is a variety endemic to
South-Western China, distributed in only Guizhou and Guangxi. It was ignored or reduced to M. fordiana
Oliver as a variety years ago. Its characters in comparison with those of M. fordiana Oliver and
M. aromatica Dandy reveal that it is a good and distinct taxon, which is affinal to M. aromatica Dandy
rather than M. fordiana Oliver. It was reduced to M. aromatica Dandy and renamed as var. calcarea
(X. H. Song)Sima et S. G. Lu in this article.

M. aromatica
var. calcarea (X. H. Song)Sima et S. G. Lu。

eboom (1993)reduced it to Manglietia fordiana Oliver
and named it var. calcarea (X. H. Song)B. L. Chen et
Nooteboom. In 2006,Kumar followed them and re-
named it as Magnolia fordiana (Oliv. ) Hu

system of the subfamily Magnolioideae by Figlar and
Noteboom (2004). Then Xia et al. (2008)reinsta-

During a visit to the botanical gardens and arbore-
ta of China for preparing a proposal of the construction
of the South-western China Germplasm Bank of Wild
Species,Dr. Sima examined carefully the types of
Manglietia calcarea X. H. Song at the Herbarium of
Nanjiang Forestry University (NF) in 2000 and be-
lieved that it is an affinal species to Manglietia aromat-
ica Dandy. From December 4,2006 to February 10,
2007,Dr. Sima and Mr. Jia-bo Hao had stayed in
Guangzhou to examine the Magnoliaceae collections at
SYS and IBSC. They saw the isotypes of M. calcarea
X. H. Song,which Dr. Yun-fei Deng gained from NF,
and Mr. Cheng-fa Pang’s collections from Guangxi. In
July 15 ~ 19,2009,Dr. Sima and Dr. Tao Xu saw
more specimens of this species at IBK. After comparing
them with those of M. fordiana Oliver and M. aromatica
Dandy (see Table 1),we affirmed that M. calcarea
X. H. Song is a good and distinct taxon, endemic to

South-western China,which is affinal to M. aromatica
Dandy rather than M. fordiana Oliver. We present our
treatment proposal here with the new system for the fam-
ily Magnoliaceae, which was recently published by Si-
ma and Lu (2012)and was strongly supported by the
nowaday results of DNA analysis (Azuma et al.,
2011;Kim & Suh,2013).

This variety differs from M. aromatica Dandy
var. aromatica in its tepals 9 and carpels 12 ~ 16 and
in its leaves coriaceous, rigid, rounded with an acu-
men 6 ~ 14 mm long at apex. It is similar to
M. fordiana Oliver in the tepals 9 except in its carpel
shape and number and in its fruit shape.
