In survey of diversity of endophytic Pestalotiopsis associated with Theaceae in Nanning, Guangxi
Province and Kunming, Yunnan Province, Pestalotiopsis karstenii, a dominant endophytic fungus
isolated from stem of Camellia sasanqua, is a new record in China.

4.6mm) long; basal appendage absent; mean conidium length/width ratio= 3.47 : 1.
In stem of Camellia sasanqua Thunb., PSHI2002Endo402, 30 XI 2002, Nanning, Guangxi;
PSHI2002Endo671, 676, 684, 685, 686, 699, 11 XI 2002, Kunming, Yunnan. The living cultures were
deposited in the Agricultural & Biotechnical College of Zhejiang University.
Pestalotiopsis karstenii is somewhat similar to Pestalotiopsis manculans (Corda) Nag Raj (1985,
1988). Pestalotiopsis manculans was also isolated from leaf spots of Camellia japonica in Hangzhou
and healthy stem of the same host species in Hangzhou, Nanning and Kunming. It could be
distinguished from Pestalotiopsis karstenii by that the apical appendages are usually 2~3, occasionally
4~5, branched ; the apexes of the appendages are slightly spathulate; the median cells are versicoloured
and basal appendage is existent (Nag Raj, 1993; Ge et al., 1993).

One hundred and forty-seven Pestalotiopsis species have been recorded in China. These records
are due to the studies made by Tai (1979), Huang (1982), Sun & Ge (1990), Sun & Zhu (1990), Sun et
al. (1990), Zhu et al. (1991), Chen & Wei (1993,1997), Chen et al. (2002), Wei & Chen (1994), Qi
(1994, 2000), Zhao & Li (1995), Guo (2002), Wang et al. (2002) and Zhang et al. (2003).
Pestalotiopsis karstenii isolated from tissues of healthy stems of Camellia sasanqua as an endophyte
seems to be unrecorded from China previously.
The authors would like to thank Dr. L.D.Guo for pre-submission review of the manuscript.
