Abstract: Mimosa pigra L., a noxious shrub, has invaded in tropical region of the world, is reported as a new record of naturalized
invasive plant of Mainland of China. The population of M. pigra has been discovered in the riverbank of Nandu River of Haikou City,
Hainan province, China. In this paper, the distribution information in Mainland of China was given, and some discussion about the weed
was made.

In recent decades, rapid development made habitat
fragmentation and edge effects, could supply better and wider
spatial situation for population occupation, so the naturalized
plants (especially invasive ones) in South China increased
gradually[1-6].
In the recent trip to Hainan province during April 23 to
May 29, 2012, an unknown plant was collected.Upon refering to
the literatures[7-11], such as Flora of Java, the early records of the
Northern territory and a description of the genus Mimosa L.
(Mimosaceae) in the new world, we found Mimosa pigra L. was a
new recorded and naturalized species in Mainland of China. M.
pigra L. is a native of tropical Africa and America, and has been
already considered as a noxious weed in tropical America, and
tropical Asia, including Taiwan and Flora of Malesiana area,
and more serious is that it has been regarded as one of the worst
weeds in Taiwan[12].

lanceolate, 2~4.5 mm long, 1~2 mm wide, persistent; petiole 1~
2 cm; main rachis with many prickles; 1~2 aculeate on each
internode.Heads 1~3 in the leaf-axils on the higher ones or all
in a terminal raceme; peduncles 1.5~3.5 cm long, clothed with
appressed acroscopic hairs with a thick base; calyx pappus-
like; corolla gamopetalous; stamens as many as or twice as
corolla -lobed, far exserted; filaments free, violet during
anthesis , turning pale with age . Pods 4 ~6 clustered per

in sunny and wetland area.
1. 4 Global distribution
Originally from Tropical South America, but now it was
pantropical and spreading rapidly in tropical Asia like as
Sumatra, Java, New Guinea[13], Taiwan[12]. This is the first record
in the Mainland of China.
2 Discussion
Although we really dont know when and how M. pigra was
dispersed or introduced in Hainan, it be sure that it is possible
that the plants invading rate will very high due to the strong
trade and monsoon wind influencing in Hainan province. M.
pigra are rich in the wetland in the region of the river or stream
in Hainan province. By artificial sprouting, we found that the
seeds of M. pigra has germinated easily in moisture soil but in
water. Misfortunely another population has built in lower
reaches of Nandujiang (南渡江 ). We propose that the vital
ability ofM. pigra will be stronger and distribute wider, quicker
and more abundance. The invading rate of M. pigra was so rapid
that it may be naturalized and migrate by water, animals,
topography and wind in the near future. It will threaten the
ecosystems of Hainan seriously. It can influence the growth of
native plants and take possession of them seriously. It is already
considered as a noxious weed in tropical America and rest of
tropical Asia, so the control of this strong invader in the future
is a very important and immeidately task for both amaeturs and
professionals.
