Abstract:The sterility of Liriodendron chinense has been extensively discussed and investigated.Self-pollination, in general, produces lower percentages of seeds than controlled cross-pollination.After the pollination, only the pollens on stigma will be engaged in the fertilization of plant and effect the seed set. This result shows that the number of pollen reaching on the stigma in Liriodendron chinese is not equivalent. In the whole pollination season, flowers opening in mid-season receive more pollens than those in early or late season. Meanwhile, the stigmas located at basal and middle parts of the receptacle receive more pollens than those at the apical. It is necessary to investigate the sources and purity of pollens on stigma and to determine whether they are related to the ability of producing viable seeds of Liriodendron chinense.
