Abstract:The HYSPLIT-4 modeling system was used to simulate the long distance atmospheric transport of wheat stripe rust spores that reached Henan Province on April 15, 2002. The case study demonstrated that the source area of the spores was not unique, but included the Gansu-Shaanxi-Shanxi region in the northwest direction and Guizhou-Chongqing-Hubei region in southwest direction. The spores were primarily transported in stable conditions associated with the passage of a low-pressure system. The spore infested areas also covered regions to the southeast of Gansu, east of Sichuan, north of Hubei, south of Shaanxi and most parts of Shanxi. The mass concentration of spores in the infested areas that were transported from the northwest direction was greater than those that came from southwest direction.
