Abstract:To clarify antixenosis and its mechanisms of 4 resistant japonica varieties including Zhendao 2, Yangjing 9538, Xudao 3 and Yandao 8 to small brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus Falln, behavioral responses of the small brown planthopper to volatiles emitted from resistant varieties were studied with H-shaped olfactometer. The results showed that a majority of L.striatellus were attracted to volatiles released from susceptible variety Wuyujing 3, but not to those from resistant varieties. The headspace composition of resistant rice variety was significantly different to that of Wuyujing 3, the susceptible check. Thirty-eight components were collected from headspace of Wuyujing 3. Besides the 38 components, there is an additional compound unknown 20 in volatiles from resistant varieties Xudao 3, Yandao 8, Yangjing 9538 and Zhendao 2. Nerolidol was only collected from headspace of Yangjing 9538 and Zhendao 2. Additionally, the proportions of some components in the volatiles from Xudao 3, Yangjing 9538 and Zhendao 2 varieties were different to those from susceptible check. The biological activities of 4 identified components to L.striatellus were measured with H-shaped olfactometer. The results demonstrated that L.striatellus could be attracted by (Z)- farnesene, nerolidol, and cedrol.
