Abstract:Hylobitelus xiaoi sp .nov (Fig -1-13)Body dull black;apices of tibiae ,tarsi and antennae dark brown Pronotum withsparse ochreous setiform scales ,which being a little denser behind the anterior marginand before scutellum .Elytra with setiform scales forming two rows of patches;patches of front raw on second and tenth intervals at 1/3 from base ,patches offront raw on fourth and sixth intervals a little before and behind the above patches;patches of hind row on second, sixth and eighth intervals approximately at 1/4 fromapex ,the patch of hind row on fourth interval a little before the others ,the hind rowpatches sometimes forming an ill -defined sinuate band ;the other area of elytra withsparse scales of the similar shape.Legs and underside of the body with yellowishwhite setiform scales.Male :Head with small dense punctures .Forehead between eyes 2/3 the widthof the base of rostrum, with a small median fovea .Rostrum slightly shorter than pronotum (9: 1 0), gradually narrowing from base to middle and widening anteriorly from the scrobe: dorsum with rather rugose punctures, which longitudinally confluen. Forming two weak carinae on each side, without median carina: apical area bare and with longitudinally dense wrinkled punctures. Antennae with second segment of funicle3/4 times as long as the first and 1.5 times as long as the third, the third a litle longer than the fourth, fourth to sixth segments of funicle moniliform, the seventh a little wider than long and as long as the third; club compact, three segmented, each length about the same (fig. -2). Pronotum as long as wide, rounded laterally , widest at the middle, slightly constricted near apex: disc with large longitudinal confluent punctures, which smaller and denser at apex, the interstices convex and glassy, median carina convex and short Scutellum evident, with dense setiferous yellowish white scales (fig. -3). Elytra 1 .5- 1 .6 times as long as wide, almost parallel-sided from base to middle, and gradually narrowing to apex. Striae with regular large punctures, which becoming smaller at declivity. Intervals almost as wide as striae, weakly convex. Legs with fore tibiae weakly dilated internally at middle (fig. -7), hind tibiae almost straight internally (fig. -8). Metasternum with larger punctures, those in its central part smaller and sparser, Its central bare depression side, which becoming smaller and sparse at middle area, median bare depression much longer than wide (fig. -4). First ventite depressed medially; the fifth flattened in the middle, weakly concave at apex: with yellowish white setiform scales at basal area, at median apex with very ochreous dense fine hairs (fig. -6). Penis flat, rather curved, widely rounded, with very small triangular weak point at apex, beside the point with hairs at apical margin (fig. -9, 10). Tagmen and parameres illustrated in fig.-11 . Female: First ventrite convex medially, not depressed. Fifth ventite slightly convex in the middle, without depression area at apex (fig. - 5). Female sternum VIII Y-shaped, with numerous, very short apical setae (fig. -12). Spermatheca showed as in fig.-13. Length (excluding rostrum): 14.0- 17.5mm, breadth: 5.4-6.5mm. Holotype Allotype -Paratypes 12 and 4 , Ji‘an, Jiangxi Province, 1994-X-25., Li Zongshun Leg.. This new species is related to Hylobitelus futabae Morimoto from Mt Tateshina- yama in Japan, but differs from it in the following characters: ( 1) elytra with yellowish white patches instead of four bands: (2) antennae with third segment a little longer than fourth. First segment of club as long as the second: (3) legs with fore tibiae slightly dilated medially; (4)penis with marginal sclerotized basal area wider Biological note: This species is a destructive insect injuring Pinus elliottii Engelm. By larvae in Ji‘ an County, Jiangxi Province, China. Entomological note: This species is named in honor of the famous Chinese entomologist Prof Xiao Gangrou, who sent me the specimens for the present study and encouraged me to study penistently. The type specimens are deposited in the Institute of Zoology, Academia Sinica.
