ABSTRACT: A rust species seldom found on Helleborus of Ranunculaceae was described as new. The rust is
characterized by its colourless and echinulate urediniospores with indistinct germ pores and verrucose teliospores with
a colourless, low and small papilla over the germ pore. Its systematic relationships are discussed and its distinguishing
microscopic features are illustrated. Judging by the distribution of the host, the rust is inferred to be indigenous in the
central part of China.

During the mycological exploration in Liupanshan Mountains, Ningxia Autonomous Region of northwest
China in September 2000, a rust fungus described here as a new species of Uromyces was collected. The rust is
characterized by its colourless and echinulate urediniospores with indistinct germ pores and verrucose teliospores
with a colourless, low and small papilla over the germ pore. Microscopic studies indicate that the rust deserves
taxonomic recognition and it is named here as Uromyces hellebori-thibetani.

The rust seems more closely related to Uromyces jonesii Peck (1882; see also Arthur, 1934) on Ranunculus
from North America than to any other species of Uromyces parasitic on the plants belonging to the Ranunculaceae.
However, U. jonesii differs in lacking uredinia and urediniospores. Uromyces lycoctoni (Kalchbr.) Trotter (1908;
see also Arthur, 1934; Hiratsuka et al., 1992) on Aconitum widely distributed in the north temperate zone, as well
as U. ficariae (Alb. & Schwein.) Lév. (see Gäumann, 1959; Wilson & Henderson, 1966) and U. fischerianus
Mayor (1906; see also Sydow & Sydow, 1910; Gäumann, 1959) on Ranunculus from Europe have smooth
teliospores, unlike U. hellebori-thibetani.
Helleborus, the host genus, is a small genus about 20 species
now being known in the family Ranunculaceae, with a restricted
distribution in southeastern Europe and western Asia. H. thibetanus
Franch., the only known species in China, is endemic and confined to
the mountainous regions (alt. 1100~3700m) in central and western
provinces of the country (Fu & Hong, 2000). It is difficult to indicate
the range of the rust but we infer that it might be restricted in the
distribution areas of H. thibetanus.
ACKNOWLEDGMENT The authors wish to thank Prof. Y.C.

operating the scanning electron microscope.

摘 要: 描述了寄生于铁筷子 Helleborus thibetanus (毛茛科)的单胞锈菌属一新种 Uromyces
hellebori-thibetani. 本种冬孢子表面具不规则粗疣,与广布北温带 Aconitum上的Uromyces lycoctoni及欧洲
Ranunculus上的U. ficariae和U. fischerianus明显不同。后三个种的冬孢子表面均为光滑。北美洲Ranunculus
上的 U. jonesii的冬孢子与本种的相似,但它是个短生活史的种,生活史中不产生夏孢子。
