Abstract:Seedless fruit have many advantages and are very popular among consumers. Nevertheless, there exist many problems in the traditional production of seedless fruit, such as there are few cultivars of natural parthenocarpy, difficulties in the breeding of tretraploid plants etc. Molecular genetic research reveals that some endogenous ge
nes in plants are responsible for parthenocarpy, even that some genes derived from bacteria can regulate the production of plant hormones. New strategies for breeding seedless plants have been proposed by using these genes. These include expression of some cytotoxin genes or genes for production of hormones in plants under the control of seed_coat_specific promoter or ovary_specific promoter and
“terminator technology” etc. It‘s clear that these transgenic methods will be introduced into a wider range of fruit and vegetables in the future.
