Notes on the publication date of four names
of Lauraceae from China

Abstract The publication date of four names of Lauraceae including Machilus polyneura
Chang, Machilus shiwandashanica Chang, Machilus cathayensis Chun ex Chang, and
Beilschmiedia furfuracea Chun ex Chang is discussed. These four names were validly
published in 1963 but not in 1960.

Chang (1960) published several names of Lauraceae including Machilus polyneura
Chang, Machilus shiwandashanica Chang, Machilus cathayensis Chun ex Chang, and
Beilschmiedia furfuracea Chun ex Chang, and listed two or more collections under each of
these four names but did not indicate the type specimen. These names were quoted thereafter,
e.g. Lee (1982), Wei et al. (1991), and Zhuang (1997), and the publication date of the Journal
of Sun Yat-Sen University (Sunyatsenia), Natural Science Edition, 1960 (1), was accepted as
the valid publication date of these names.
Under Art. 37.1 of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (Greuter et al.,
2000), these four names were not validly published in 1960 because they were published after
January 1st, 1958, and no types were designated. As a result, the citation of Lee (1982), Wei
et al. (1991), and Zhuang (1997) is incorrect. These names should be validated for a wider
use, and their publication date should be that of their valid publication according to Art. 45.1.
In fact, Chang might have realized the invalid status of these names, and indicated types
for the four names in a following paper (Chang, 1963), and thus validated the four names.
Under Art. 45.1, before January 1st, 1973, when the various conditions for valid publication
of a name are not simultaneously fulfilled, the date is that on which the last is fulfilled. The
four names were published before 1973, the various conditions for valid publication were not
simultaneously fulfilled in 1960, and the last condition was fulfilled in 1963. The valid
publication date of the four names, therefore, is 1963 but not 1960.
