Abstract:Positive effects of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) on growth of terrestrial plants are well studied. However, little is known about AM of wetland plants, possibly due to the previous wrong concept that AM only existed in terrestrial plants. In the recent years, the studies on AM of wetland plants are getting more attentions as the functions of wetland in improving environment have been gradually recognized. The current studies indicated that AM existed in many kinds of wetland and wetland plants and AM formation and development were influenced by hydrological status. Glomus was the common genus in wetland environment. Some progress has been made on the studies on AM of wetland plants in foreign countries, despite much fewer studies than those in terrestrial plants. Compared to foreign countries, however, studies on AM of wetland plant are few in China. The present paper reviewed the studies on AM of wetland plants, including the category of wetland plants forming AM structure, the species of AM fungi in wetland environment, the effects of AM on growth of wetland plants, and the factors that affect AM formation in wetland plants. In addition, the future studies on AM of wetland plants are proposed. The purpose of this review is to provide a basis for studying on AM of wetland plants in China.
