Abstract:Brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), is a kind of worldwide serious pests on rice, with easily outbreak. The breeding of resistant variety has become a major management strategy against BPH. To select high BPH-resistant rice varieties in Yellow and Huaihe River areas in China, the systematic study on effect of nine rice varieties in Henan Province on the development, survival and reproduction of BPH was conducted using life table method under laboratory condition with 26±1℃, (85±5)% RH and L∶D=16∶8 photoperiod. The significant differences were found in fecundity, hatching rate, adult longevity, and developmental duration of BPH on different rice varieties. Furthermore, rice varieties to a certain extent had effects on wing dimorphism of BPH. The life table parameters comprehensive analysis revealed that the innate capacity for increase (rm) of BPH on Qingliangyou 916 (QLY916) was 0.56, the net reproductive rate (R0) and index of population trend (I) were 163.50 and 191.02, respectively, followed by Tefeng 2053 (TF2053), Gangyou 5330 (GY5330), Ⅱ You 688 (ⅡY688), Ⅱ You 2035 (ⅡY2035), Xiangfeng 1026 (XF1026), Fengliangyou 916 (FLY916), Fengnuo 801 (FN801) and Zhenzhunuo (ZZN). QLY916 was the most suitable variety for growth and development of BPH.
