Abstract:Drupesandseedsof17speciesinBerchemiaandBerchemiella (Rhamnaceae)wereinvestigatedunder
SEMandLM.ThepresentstudyindicatedthatthedrupeofBerchemiellais1Gloculedwithoneseed,andthedrupes
are2Gloculed,eachloculewithoneseedinthemostspeciesofBerchemia.However,thedrupeis2Glocular,butoneloG
culebigandwithsingleseed,anotherloculesmalandwithoutseedinB.polyphylla.ThisspeciesmaybeatransiG
tionaltaxonbetweenBerchemiellaandBerchemia.SeedshapeofBerchemiaandBerchemiellaisusualyirregularly
longGelipsoidal.Seedcoatsculpturecanbedividedintothreemajortypes,i.e.smoothoralmostsmooth,indistinctly
orsparselystriatewithlowstriae,distinctlystriateorsulcate.Thediferencesinseedcoatsculptureamongspecies
areoftaxonomicsignificanceforidentifyingsomespeciesinthesetwogenera.

摘 要:在扫描电镜和解剖镜下研究鼠李科(Rhamnaceae)勾儿茶属(Berchemia)和小勾儿茶属(Berchemiella)共
17种植物的果实和种子形态.结果表明:小勾儿茶属的核果1室,具1枚种子,勾儿茶属大多数种的核果2室,
每室具1枚种子,但多叶勾儿茶(B.polyphylla)的核果1室较大,具1枚种子,另一室较小而没有种子,该种可
能是连接勾儿茶属和小勾儿茶属的中间类群.这两个属的种子形状通常为不规则长椭圆形,种皮纹饰可划分为
光滑或几乎光滑、具不明显或稀疏的条纹以及具明显的条纹或沟这三种类型.种皮纹饰的差异对这两个属属下
种类的划分具有一定的意义.讨论了与前人研究结果不同之处和可能的原因.

  ThegenusBerchemia (Rhamnaceae)comprises
about31specieswithadistributionalcenterinEastern
AsiaandSoutheasternAsia.Chinahas18speciesand6
varieties(Chenetal.,1982,2007).Berchemiellawas
firstdescribedbyNakai(1823)asanewgenus.Itis
endemictoeasternAsiaandincludesthreespecies,
withoneinJapanandKorea,twospeciesandonevariG
ety(alendemic)inHubeiandYuannanProvincesof
China(Chenetal.,2007).
AboutthetaxonomictreatmentofBerchemiela
andBerchemia,therearetwodiferentopinionsinthe
previousstudies.Koidzumi(1925),Ohwi(1956,1978),
Ohwietal.(1992)andKitamura(1971)placedthe
BerchemielainthegenusBerchemiaasasectionmainly
basedonthemorphology.Somebotanistsfolowedthis
treatment,i.e.putthespeciesofBerchemielaasthe
membersofBerchemia (Kangetal.,1991;Leeetal.,
1996,2003,2005,2006;Songetal.,2008).Butanother
taxonomists(Nakai,1923;Yamazaki,1973;Chenetal.,
1982,2007;Kangetal.,2005,2007)consideredBercheG
mielaandBerchemiaastwoseparategeneraalsobased
onthemorphologicalcharacter.
Recentlysometaxonomistsfurtherstudiedthe
morphologicalcharacterofthetwogeneraandreported
thatBerchemieladiferedfromBerchemiainthefolG
lowingcharacters:treeerect(nottwing),branchesredG
dishbrown,brownandgreywithscatteredrasisedlentiG
cels,stipulesfree,sepalswithbeaklikeprotrusionsatthe
keeledadaxialmidvein;diskpentagonous,notpersisting
infruit;drupe1Gloculed,1Gseeded;andleavesoftenaG
symmetricalatthebase(Chenetal.,1979,1982).Qian
(1988)studiedtheanatomicstructuresofwoodandpolG
lenmorphologyofthesetwogenera.Hefoundthatin
Berchemielathediferencebetweenheartwoodand
sapwoodisobvoius,poreGarrangementringGporous,vesG
selswithlesstyloses,rayscomparativelynarrowand
shorter,aswelaswithlesscrystals;thepolenaperture
with4thickeningswherecolpiandorapassacrossrather
largeanddistinctandstretchedalongcolpus,HGshape
formedbythecolpiandoradistinct,theornamentation
ofexinefinelyreticulate.However,inBerchemiathe
diferencebetweenheartwoodandsapwoodindistinct,
poreGarrangementdifuseGporous,vessels with more
tyloses,rayscomparativelywideandlong,aswelas
withmorecrystals;thepolenaperturewith4thickenG
ingssmalandsometimesformingaring,HGshapegenG
eralyindistinct,theornamentationofexinefinelyreticuG
lateGfoveolateorfoveolata.Qian(1988)agreedwiththe
opinionofNakai(1823).
Seedmorphologyhasbeenshowntoprovideuseful
charactersfortheanalysisoftaxonomicrelationshipsin
awidevarietyofplantfamilies(Esau,1953;Mohana,
1974;Barthlott,1981,1984;Shetler,1986;Takhtajan,
1991).Inadditiontogrossmorphologyofseeds,thedeG
tailsofsculpturingoftheouterseedcoatcanbequite
variableandofsystematicimportance.Forexample,reG
centstudiesonthetribeHoscyameaeofSolanaceaehave
shownthatseedmorphologycharacteristicsareofconG
siderablesystematicsignificance,bothatthegenericand
specificlevel.Seedcoatcharacteristicscanbeusedto
distinguishthegeneraPhysalis,Capsicum,andTuboG
capsicum(Zhangetal.,2005).
Seed and drupe morphology of the genera
BerchemiaandBerchemielahavenotyetbeenexamG
inedandevaluatedforitssystematicutilitywithinthese
generainpreviousstudies.Inorderedtofurtherdiscuss
thesystematicpositionofBerchemiaandBerchemiela,
thepresentpaperstudiedtheseedcoatof16speciesof
BerchemiaandonespeciesofBerchemiela(RhamnaceG
ae)aswelasthedrupeanatomyofthem.
1 MaterialsandMethods
MostmaterialsweretakenfromHerbariumspeciG
mensofHerbariumPE,InstituteofBotany,theChiG
neseAcademyofSciences.Onlyafewfromfresh
drupes(Appendix)werecolectedfrom KoreaReG
search Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology
(KRIBB),Korea.ForSEMexamination,seedswere
carefulyseparatedfromdrydrupes,thendehydrated,
removedontodoubleGsidedadhesivetape,mountedonto
astub,andcoatedwithgoldforthreetofourminutes.

TheobservationsweremadewithaHitachiSG4800
ScanningElectron Microscope.Approximately3-5
goodfulydevelopedseedsofeachspecieswereselectG
edandpreparedforSEMandstereomicroscope.For
drupe,freshordriedmaterialwasexaminedbyknifeG
dissecting.
2 ResultsandAnalysis
2.1Featuresofthedrupes
Drupeusualycylindric,rarelyobovoide,purpleG
redorpurpleGblack,(5-14)mm×(2.5-6.0)mm,
epicarpsstiflycartilaginous,1G2Glocular.Basedonthe
featuresofdrupeGlocular,threetypescanbediferentiaG
ted.(1)1Gloculardrupe,withonefertileseed:BercheG
miellaberchemiaefolia (Fig.1:13);(2)2Glocular
drupe:oneloculebigandwithsingleseed,anotherlocG
ulesmal andwithoutseed:Berchemiapolyphylla

3 DiscussionandConclusions
SixteenspeciesinBerchemiaandonespeciesin
Berchemmielastudiedhere,thefeaturesofseedcoat
anddrupesareinformativetothesystematicrelationship
ofthetwogenera.
ThepresentresearchresultindicatedthattheepiG
carpsofdrupesinBerchemiaandBerchemielaarestifG
lycartilaginous.Thedrupeloculesinthetwogeneraare
smal.Theseedistightlyadnatedtotheendocarpand
filedinthewholelocule.Itis,therefore,verydificultto
separateortakeoutoftheseedsfromthedrupes.It
needstouseforcepstocarefulymashthedrupefrom
thetopinordertoremoveafulyGformedseedandto
examinethefeatureofthedrupe.ThismightbethereaG
sonthatseedsofBerchemiaandBerchemielahavenevG
erbeenstudiedinthepreviousresearchworks.ThepeoG
plesometimeswronglyconsideredthatthedrupeisseed.
Inthepreviousreports,thedrupeofBerchemiela

er,ourstudyfoundasignificantcharacter:B.polyphylG

seed,anotherloculewassmal,withoutseed.ThepresG
entstudyshowedacontinuousvarietyinthecharacterof
drupesinthesetwogenera,i.e.thedrupeofB.
polyphylais2Gloculedwithoneloculebigand1GseeG
ded,anothersmalandwithoutseed.Theevolutionary
trendinthedrupesinthesetwogeneraperhapsisinthis
directionfrom2Gloculedto1Gloculed.ThespeciesB.
polyphylamaybeatransitionaltaxonbetweenBercheG
mielaandBerchemia.ThisevolutionarytrendisbasiG
calyconsistentwiththeinterpretationfrommorpholoG
gy,woodanatomyandpolenmorphology(Qian,1988).
Based on the presentstudy,seed shape of
Berchemia andBerchemiella isusualyirregularly

diferencesinseedcoatsculptureamongspeciesareof
taxonomicsignificanceforidentifyingsomespeciesin
thesetwogenera.Weshouldcombinemoredatafor
furtherdiscussingthesystematicpositionofBercheG
miellainfuture.
