Abstract The newly described new species Lysimachia longshengensis (Primulaceae) is
reduced to Lycianthes lysimachioides (Solanaceae) as a synonym.
Key words Primulaceae, Lysimachia longshengensis, Solanaceae, Lycianthes lysimachio-
ides, new synonymy.
A new species of Lysimachia L., L. longshengensis G. Z. Li & S. C. Tang, was described
and well illustrated in 1999 (Tang & Li, 1999). The original description stated that the calyx
is 5-lobed; while the accompanying illustration clearly showed a 10-toothed calyx. The
discrepancy led the present authors to doubt the identity of the species. Through the courtesy
of Professor LI Guang-Zhao of Guangxi Institute of Botany, we have had the opportunity of
examining the type specimen of the new species. The plant is a perennial herb, with prostrate
stems rooting at nodes, yellow flowers (Tang & Li, 1999) and basifixed anthers opening by
apical pores. Superficially it is somewhat similar to some species of Lysimachia, especially
the species in subgenus Idiophyton Hand.-Mazz. (Hu & Kelso, 1996); but to place it in
Primulaceae is quite out of place. A close study reveals that the vegetative and floral
characters of the plant, e.g. leaves in pairs but not opposite, calyx 10-toothed, stamens
alternate to corolla-lobes, ovary 2-locular, are all identical to those in Lycianthes
lysimachioides (Wall.) Bitter var. lysimachioides of Solanaceae (Zhang et al., 1994).
Therefore the following reduction was found to be necessary.
Lycianthes lysimachioides (Wall.) Bitter in Abh. Naturw. Ver. Bremen 25: 991. 1919; C. Y.
Wu & S. C. Huang in Fl. Reip. Pop. Sin. 67 (1): 133, pl. 34: 1–5. 1978; Z. Y. Zhang, A. M. Lu
& W. G. D’Arcy in Z. Y. Wu & P. Raven, Fl. China 17: 328. 1994.
Lysimachia longshengensis G. Z. Li & S. C. Tang in Guihaia 19: 342,fig. 2. 1999, syn.
nov. Type: China. Guangxi (广西): Longsheng (龙胜),alt. 800 m, 1998-08-16, G. Z. Li & S.
C. Tang (李光照, 唐赛春) H212 (holotype, IBK!).
Lycianthes lysimachioides is widely distributed in China (Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi,
Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Taiwan, Yunnan), India, Indonesia and Nepal. In
the Herbarium of South China Botanical Garden, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IBSC)
there are three specimens of this species collected from Longsheng, Guangxi, the type locality
of Lysimachia longshengensis.
