Abstract:‘Torvum Vigor’ (Solanum torvum Swartz), a salt tolerant rootstock and eggplant cultivar ‘Suqiqie’ (Solanum melongena L.) as scion, were used to study the effect of NaCl stress (80 mmol•L-1) on metabolism of polyamines and abscisic acid (ABA) content in leaves of grafted and non-grafed seedlings. The results showed that plant growth, polyamines contents (free, conjugated and bound ) and ABA content were significantly higher in grafted seedlings than non-grafted seedlings under NaCl stress. NaCl stress also significantly increased spermine (Spm) and ABA contents in leaves. It was also observed that putrescine (Put) and spermidine (Spd) contents were increased during early stages and gradually decreased both in grafted and non-grafted seedlings. However, the decrement of Put and Spd contents in leaves of grafted seedlings was lower than that of non-grafted seedlings, while the increment of Spm and ABA contents of grafted seedlings was higher than that of own-root seedlings. The growth and polyamines metabolism of grafted seedlings were less affected by NaCl stress than non-grafted seedlings. It is concluded that both the rapid accumulation of ABA and higher polyamine contents might be involved in stronger salt tolerance of grafted eggplant seedlings.
