Pteroceras Hassk. is widely distributed from
northwestern Himalaya to the Philippines and New
Guinea[1]. Among the 19 species currently recognized,
there were two species (one endemic) recorded
in China before, and both of them occurred in
Yunnan Province[2–3]. During our botanical survey in
Guangxi Province, several deposited specimens from
Nonggang National Nature Reserve were examined
thoroughly. Pteroceras simondianum (Gagnep.) Aver.,
a species previously known endemic to Vietnam,
was found to be new for Chinese orchid flora[4–6].
The discovery was the first demonstration of the
distribution of this genus in Guangxi.

摘要: 报道了中国兰科植物一新记录种,即西蒙长足兰[Pteroceras simondianum (Gagnep.) Aver.],并提供了描述和图片。本种形
态与长足兰[P. leopardinum (Par. & Rchb. f.) Seidenf. & Smitin.]相似,但叶明显较宽,偏斜;花淡黄色,略被绛紫色斑块或条纹;子
房光滑;花粉块为孔裂等,易于区别。

Abstract: Pteroceras simondianum (Gagnep.) Aver., a newly recorded species from Guangxi, China is described
and illustrated. This species is similar to P. leopardinum (Par. & Rchb. f.) Seidenf. & Smitin., but differs by having
distinctly wider and oblique leaves; light yellow flowers with a few crimson-purple blotches and bars; glabrous
ovary; sub-spherical pollinia with a small, porous-like cleft.

glabrous; floral bracts ovate-triangular, concave,
glabrous, apex obtuse. Pedicel and ovary terete,
glabrous, 8–10 mm long, 0.5–1.0 mm in diam. Flowers
slightly fleshy, resupinate; dorsal sepal ovate-
lanceolate, 9–10.5 mm × 4–5 mm, apex obtuse, slight
yellow, sometimes blotched or barred crimson-purple
on the adaxial side; lateral sepals adnate to the column
foot, obliquely ovate-lanceolate, 10–12 mm × 4.5–
5.5 mm, apex obtuse or acute, slight yellow, often
blotched or barred crimson-purple on the adaxial side;
Petals oblong-lanceolate, 8–9 mm × 2–3 mm, apex
obtuse; lip sessile, 3-lobed; 3–3.5 mm long, obtuse-
rounded; lateral lobes erect, obliquely flabellate-
oblong, slight yellow with dense crimson-purple
stripes on the adaxial side; mid-lobe fleshy, base with
a knob-like callus just above the spur entrance. Spur
short and sac-like, 2–2.5 mm long, inside glabrous,
apex rounded. Column subterete, 3.2–3.5 mm high,
slight yellow with streaked purple, column-foot 2.5–
3 mm long. Rostellum much shorter; pollinia 2, waxy,
subspherical, dorsally with a small, porous-like cleft,
attached by a linear-oblong stipe to a subcircularar
viscidium. Fl. Feb.–May.
Distribution: Vietnam. New record to China.
China: Guangxi, Nonggang National Nature
Reserve, epiphyte on tree trunks in open forests or
at forest margins in evergreen rain forest, alt. 183 m.
Latitude: 22°27′00.90 N, Longitude: 106°57′58.87 E.

Conservation Status: This species is endemic
in this region and confined to a small forest patch as
we currently investigated. Therefore, we consider this
species to be vulnerable to extinction as ‘Critically
Endangered’(CR), according to IUCN red list categories
and criteria[7].
It’s related to P. leopardinum (Par. & Rchb. f.)
Seidenf. & Smitin.[3–4], a species from Yunnan, but the
latter differs in distinctly narrower leaves; densely
purplish-brown dotted flowers; 3-keeled ovary; sub-
spherical pollinia with deep longitudinal cleft.
