dissectingmicroscopeandscanningelectronmicroscopy.Theeffectsofseedcoatornamentationandmuci
lageonwateruptake,sandadhesion,floatabilityandgerminationofseedswereanalyzed.Theresult
showedthat:(1)Theseedcoatornamentationof犘犲犵犪狀狌犿犿狌犾狋犻狊犲犮狋狌犿 wasformedbyoutwardprotru
dingappendagesontheouterpericlinalwalsofepidermalcelsandpresentedareticularstructure.Peli
clescoveredonthepolyhedralmeshesofseedcoatornamentation,makingthemeshesformclosedcham
bers.Afterabsorbingwater,thepeliclesbecamemucilaginousandalotofbubblesappearedinthemuci
lagechambers.Themucilagewasgradualydissolvedanddisappearedafterwaterabsorptiondehydration.
(2)Themucilagelayerandchambersofseedcanstoremuchair,whichfacilitatedseedfloatationonmoving
waterandfurtherdispersal.Meanwhile,seedcoatornamentationandmucilagecanenhanceadhesiveability
ofseedtothesoilandotherplants,therebyescapingfromseedsbarenesstomaintainseedvigor.Theseed
coatornamentationandmucilagealsocanabsorbalargeamountofwaterquicklyandholdwater,thus
maintainingsoilseedbankintheharshdesert.(3)Themucilaginousseedcoatcandelaygerminationbut
promoteseedlingsgrowthinanunpredictableenvironment,whichincreasingtheabilityofplantestablish
ment.
