Abstract: In preparationof theVitaceaetreatment for Floraof China, we discovered that Cayratia mollissimavar. lanceolata
C . L . Li from China’sHainan is highly distinct from C. mollissima (Wall .) Gagnep . from the Malay Peninsula and In-
dochina in fruit and leaf morphology . ThetaxonfromHainan deserves recognition at the species level and thus anew combi-
nation, Cayratia lanceolata (C . L . Li ) J . Wen & Z .-D .Chen, is herein made .

Woody lianas . Branchlets slender, dark brown, terete
with longitudinal ridges, glabrous . Tendrils bifurcate . Leaves
trifoliolate; stipules caducous; petiole 2 - 3 cm, central petio-
lules 0 .7 - 2 cm, lateral petiolules 0 .3 - 0 .9 cm, sparsely pi-
lose; central leaflets lanceolate, 6 - 14×1.5 - 3 cm, base cu-
neate, rarely suborbicular, apex long acuminate; lateral leaf-
lets ovate-lanceolate, 4 . 5 - 9 .5 cm×1 .5 - 2 .5 cm, base asym-
metric and suborbicular, margin sparsely with sharp teeth, apex
long acuminate, sparsely hispidulous with appressed and fine
hairs, abaxial midveins sparsely villose; lateral veins 6 - 8
pairs, veinlets inconspicuous . Corymbose-polychasiumaxillary .
Peduncle 2 - 8 cm, with nodes at middle and brownish bracts,
pubescent . Pedicels 0 .5 - 1 mm, densely pubescent . Buds el-
liptic, 1 - 1 .5 mm long, apex rounded . Calyx cotyliform, ca-
lyx teeth inconspicuous, pubescent . Petals ovate-elliptic, 0 .8
- 1 .3 mm long, glabrous . Anthers oval , length more than or
nearly equal to width . Lower part of ovary adnate to disc . Style
slender . Berries 0 .8 - 1 cmin diam . , 2 - 3-seeded . Seeds glo-
bose to semiglobose, base rostrate, apex rounded, surface
smooth, upper raphe protruding, ventral holes rounded, ca . 2
mmin diam ., ribs along margin slightly protruding . Fl . Apr-
May, fr . Jun-Jul .
Habitat: Shrublands, roadsides, or disturbed areas at
edge of forests, or in forests .

Cayratia lanceolata can beeasily distinguished from C. m-
ollissima of Malaysia and Indochina in the former’s black ( vs .
pink) , and much smaller (0 . 8 - 1 cm vs . 2 - 3 cmlong) fruits .
Furthermore, fruits of C . lanceolata areglobose to semiglobose,
whereas those of C. mollissima are ellipsoid ( cf . Latiff 1982;
Li 1998) . Leaves of C . mollissima are pubescent to tomentose
whereas those of C . lanceolata are only sparsely pilose to villose
on the lower surface . The petiolule and petioles of C. lanceolata
is purplish (vs . greenish in C. mollissima) .
