Abstract: A species of the genus Clematisꎬ C􀆰 flavidonitidaꎬ belonging to Sect. Aspidanthera subsect. Dioicaeꎬ is
described as new from Mexico. The morphological differences between it and its close allyꎬ C􀆰 grossaꎬ are discussed.

Species nova haec est arcte affinis C􀆰 grossae
Benth.ꎬ quae foliis 5 ̄foliolatim pinnatis vel ternatisꎬ
foliolis majoribus plerumque cordatis vel late ovatis
usque ad 8􀆰 5 cm longis et latis margine grosse denta ̄
tis dorso vulgo dense albo ̄sericeis differt.
Woody vine. Branch 3 mm acrossꎬ shallowly
longitudinally 6 ̄sulcateꎬ densely yellowish ̄ puberu ̄
lous. Leaves oppositeꎬ pinnateꎬ 5 ̄foliolateꎬ 8 - 10
cm longꎻ leaflets petiolulateꎬ paperyꎬ ovateꎬ 3􀆰 5 -
4􀆰 6 cm longꎬ 2-3 cm broadꎬ at apex acuminate or
acuteꎬ at base truncate ̄ roundedꎬ at margin 3 - 5 ̄
denticulate per sideꎬ undivided or 3 ̄lobulateꎬ adaxi ̄
ally dense appressed ̄ pubescentꎬ abaxially yellow ̄
ish ̄sericeous ̄velutinousꎻ basal nerves slightly im ̄
pressed adaxiallyꎬ flat abaxiallyꎻ petioles 3-5􀆰 5 cm
longꎬ with leaf rhachis densely yellowish ̄puberulous.
Staminate thyrses singly axillaryꎬ 7 - 9􀆰 5 cm longꎬ
4􀆰 5- 5 cm broadꎬ many ̄floweredꎬ with uppermost
umbellate nodesꎬ peduncles 2􀆰 5-3􀆰 5 cm longꎬ with
rhachis and pedicels densely yellowish ̄puberulousꎻ
bracts oppositeꎬ orbicular ̄ovate or broadly ovateꎬ
0􀆰 9-1􀆰 4 cm longꎬ 1-1􀆰 5 cm broadꎬ at apex obtuse
or roundedꎬ inconspicuously 3 ̄lobulateꎬ adaxially
puberulousꎬ abaxially yellowish ̄sericeous ̄velutinous.
Staminate flower 1-1􀆰 2 cm in diam.: pedicel 1-1􀆰 2
cm longꎻ sepals 4ꎬ whiteꎬ oblanceolate or narrowly
obovateꎬ 6-8 mm longꎬ 2-2􀆰 8 mm broadꎬ at apex
obtuseꎬ adaxially below sparsely above densely pu ̄
berulousꎬ abaxially entirely densely appressed ̄pube ̄
rulousꎬ along margin narrowly velutinousꎻ stamans
numerousꎬ 2􀆰 5-6 mm longꎬ glabrousꎬ with narrowly
linear filaments and oblong or narrowly oblong an ̄
thers 0􀆰 8-1􀆰 2 mm long.

Bejuco herbáceo dioico. Flor masculina blanca. Oca ̄
sional. 23 Oct. 1981. David H. Lorence 3769 ( ꎬ
holotypeꎬ PE).
This species is closely related to C􀆰 grossa Benth.ꎬ
and from the latter differs in its 5 ̄foliolately pinnate
leavesꎻ and in its ovate leaflets which are smallerꎬ
3􀆰 5-4􀆰 6 cm longꎬ 2-3 cm broadꎬ at margin dentic ̄
ulateꎬ and abaxially densely yellowish ̄sericeous ̄ve ̄
lutinous. In C􀆰 grossaꎬ the leaves are both 5 ̄folio ̄
lately pinnate and ternateꎬ and the leaflets are lar ̄
gerꎬ usually cordate or broadly ovateꎬ up to 8􀆰 5 cm
long and broadꎬ at margin coarsely dentateꎬ and ab ̄
axially usually densely white ̄sericeous.
