Abstract:The widely cultivated processing tomato, Tunhe No.8, was selected to study the effect of glycine betaine (GB) on processing tomato under drought stress(D) in Xinjiang. In the leaves of processing tomato, the contents chlorophyll and protein are declined, while the contents of proline and soluble sugar are increased, and antioxidant enzyme activities are enhanced by spraying GB under drought stress. In the presence of exogenous GB, there is a diminution in the content of MDA (membrane lipid peroxidation). The beneficial effects of GB treatments in adaptation to drought stress in processing tomato plants are evident from the increase in the overall yield. Thus application of GB is recommended for plants growing in water-deficient soils.
