Abstract: Three species and one variety: Brotherella recurvansꎬ Clastobryum cuculligerumꎬ Taxithelium liukiuense
and Trismegistia calderensis var. rigida are reported as new records to Chinaꎬ and their description and illustrations
are provided. These new records are based on the specimens from Hainanꎬ Hong Kong and Yunnan.
Key words: Chinaꎻ New recordꎻ Pylaisiadelphaceaeꎻ Semtophyllaceaeꎻ Taxonomy
The Semtophyllaceae is one of the most taxo ̄
nomically difficult moss families in the Chinese bryo ̄
flora. The family in China was first revised by Tan
and Jia (1999) and its floristic treatments were later
provided by Jia and Wu (2004) and Jiaꎬ Wu and
Tan (2005). A total of 18 genera 45 species and 6
varieties / forms were reported in the latter studies.
Howeverꎬ a great number of Sematophyllaceae speci ̄
mens in several Chinese herbaria remain undeter ̄
mined. During the course of our continuing study of
the Chinese mossesꎬ we encountered some interest ̄
ing findings. In this paperꎬ we report four records
new to Chinaꎬ belonging to Brotherella Loeske ex M.
Fleisch.ꎬ Clastobryum Dozy & Molk.ꎬ Taxithelium
Spruce ex Mitt.ꎬ and Trismegistia (Müll. Hal.) Müll.
Hal. repectively. According to the recently research
results (Goffinet and Buckꎬ 2004ꎻ Frey and Stechꎬ
2009) based on molecular dataꎬ these four genera
have been transferred to the Pylaisiadelphaceaeꎬ
which we follow in this paper.

According to Buck (1984)ꎬ all species in the
genus Brotherella should be transferred to Pylaisia ̄
delpha. Howeverꎬ Ando et al. ( 1989) considered
Brotherella to be a genus distinct from Pylaisiadel ̄
phaꎬ with the type species of the two genera belong in
different genera [ Brotherellaꎬ type: B􀆰 lorentiziana
(Mol. ex Lor.) Loeske ex Fleisch.ꎻ Pylaisiadelphaꎬ
type: P􀆰 rhaphidostegioides (Card.) Card.]. The dis ̄
tinguishing features between Brotherella and Pylaisia ̄
delpha were discussed by Ando et al. (1989). Several
recent studies (Magill et al.ꎬ 1994ꎻ Crosby et al.ꎬ
1999ꎻ Tan and Jiaꎬ 1999ꎻ Buck and Goffinetꎬ 2000ꎻ
Tanꎬ 2000aꎬbꎻ Goffinet and Buckꎬ 2004ꎻ Iwatsukiꎬ
2004ꎻ Frey and Stechꎬ 2009) have accepted Broth ̄
erella and Pylaisiadelpha as two independent genera.
Brotherella recurvans is previously known prima ̄
rily in North Americaꎬ the genus leave three spe ̄
cies: B􀆰 recurvansꎬ B􀆰 roellii (Ren. & Card.) Fleisch.
and B􀆰 canadaensis (Schofiledꎬ 2006). B􀆰 recurvans
is the most common species in N. America. So far
most specimens from N. America have been identi ̄
fied as B􀆰 recurvans. In factꎬ we found that some
specimens did not match the criteria of B􀆰 recurvansꎬ
belong to the concept of this speciesꎬ but belong to
B􀆰 complanataꎬ B􀆰 candaensisꎬ B􀆰 fauriei and B􀆰 eryth ̄
ocaulis. It is distinguished from the other species of
Brotherella in 1) apex strongly curved and evidently
toothedꎻ 2) supra cells moderately large and hya ̄
line. Sometimes this species is very similar to Hyp ̄
num in the appearance.
In Chinaꎬ this species also was reported in Jian ̄
gsu (Liu et al.ꎬ 1989)ꎬ Taiwan (Nakanishiꎬ 1963ꎻ
Nakanishꎬ 1964ꎻ Wangꎬ 1970ꎻ Lai and Wangꎬ 1976ꎻ
Kuo and Kiangꎬ 1987ꎻ Linꎬ 1988). Howeverꎬ the
report from Taiwan has no citation on specimens. Yet
we failed to find any specimens from Jiangsu. Thus
we are treating these earlier reports of B􀆰 recurvans in
China as the doubtful records.

Clastobryum is a genus largely distributed in
tropical regionꎬ and there was only one species ̄
C􀆰 glabrescens was reported in China previously (Tan
and Jiaꎬ 1999)ꎬ which is characterized by its sharp ̄
ly tristichous phyllotaxy. Clastobryum cuculligerum is
the second species of Clastobryum found in China.
Clastobryum cuculligerum as compared to C􀆰 gla ̄
brescensꎬ is pretty small and slenderꎬ and often epi ̄
phytically grows on branches as well. Plants are
glossyꎬ leaves are lanceolateꎬ and leaf margins
clearly serrate above. Median leaf cells are clearly
porose. Clastobryum cuculligerum has weakly papil ̄
lose to smooth propagules (Tan and Iwatsukiꎬ 1992).
Tixier’s Illustrations (Tixierꎬ 1969ꎬ 1977) about this
species showed smooth gemmaꎬ but Chinese speci ̄
mens have weakly and loosely papillose while plants
from Papua New Guinea plants also have been papil ̄
lose (Tan et al.ꎬ 2011). Tan and Iwatsuki (1992)
considered that Clastobryum cuculligerumꎬ C􀆰 indicum
and C􀆰 conspicuum had been confused in herbariumꎬ
but C􀆰 cuculligerum differs from C􀆰 indicum in having
serrate leaf margins and linear leaf cells. Dixon
( 1924 ) noted that the perichaetial leaves were
slightly denticulate onlyꎬ but the serration is very
distinctive in our Chinese materials.

Sakurai (1932) considered T􀆰 liukiuense was very
similar to T􀆰 nepalenseꎬ especially in the shape of
leafꎬ only slightly smaller than the latter. Howeverꎬ
Seki ( 1968) stated it bore much resemblance to
T􀆰 instratumꎬ but the large seriate papillae on leaf ̄
cell were very unique. According to Câmara (2011b)ꎬ
this species should be more closely related to
T􀆰 instratum for lacking upper quadratic alar cells.
Noguchi et al. (1994) provided quanlity illustration
of T􀆰 liukiuense drawn from its isotype specimens.
Taxithelium liukiuense was regarded as an en ̄
demic and rare species to Japan. Câmara (2011a)
did not check its type specimensꎬ neither had any
comments on it in his revision work. It was obvious
that Câmara mistook the information of type speci ̄
menꎬ for it was deposited in Kyuichi Sakurai Her ̄
barium (MAK)ꎬ not in K or BM.
