ferentmethylesterificationdegrees(MDs)inbananaleavesatdifferentdevelopmentalstagesusingimmu
nofluorescencelabelingtechniques.Inaddition,enzymeactivityofPMEswasalsotested.Theresultsin
dicatedthat:(1)PMEslocatedmainlyinthemesophylandguardcelsintissueculturedbananaseed
lings.BoththelevelandactivityofPMEsdecreasedwiththedevelopmentoftheplant.(2)HGsatdiffer
entMDsalsomainlyappearedinmesophylcelsintissueculturedplantsandtheircontentsreducedgradu
alywiththedevelopmentofplants,thoughthespeedvariedwitheachother.However,thedistribution
oftheseHGsintheepidermis,theguardcelsandtheveinofbananaleavesshoweddifferentialpatterns.
TheMDsofHGspresentintheguardcelswasrelativelyhigh.TheseresultsindicatedthatPMEsandfive
testedHGsweremainlypresentinthemesophyl.Duringthedevelopmentofbananaleaves,thelevelsof
theseHGsshowedsimilartrendtothatofPMEs.
