Abstract: Aristolochia impressinervis C. F. Liang was regarded as an endemic species to Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous
RegionꎬChina. This species is here reported as the first record for the flora of Vietnam. Notes on taxonomy and distin ̄
guishable discussion from A. pierrei L. are also provided.

1 Introduction
Aristolochia comprises about 500 speciesꎬis the lar ̄
gest genus of Aristolochiaceae (Wagner et alꎬ2012) and
widely distributed throughout the tropicsꎬsubtropics and
also extending to temperate regions (González & Steven ̄
sonꎬ 2002ꎻ Hwang et alꎬ 2003ꎻ Neinhuis et alꎬ 2005ꎻ
Wanke et alꎬ2006). Currently 14 Aristolochia speciesꎬbe ̄
longing to two subgenera Siphisia and Aristolochiaꎬwere
reported from Vietnam (Phamꎬ2000ꎻ Nguyenꎬ2003ꎻ Do
et alꎬ2014)ꎬ6 of which belong to subgenus Aristolochia.
In contrast to the well ̄known floras of Thailand (Phu ̄
phathanaphongꎬ1987)ꎬand China (Hwang et alꎬ1988ꎬ
2003)ꎬAristolochia has not been completely revised for
VietnamꎬLaos and Cambodia since the primary studies
were carried out by French botanists nearly 100 years ago
(Lecomteꎬ1909ꎬ1910). The assignment of a name to a
taxon has been used inconsistently throughout these publi ̄
cationsꎬas different names have been used for the same
species. Actuallyꎬ there are numerous unidentified Aris ̄
tolochia specimens collected from Vietnam still deposited
in worldwide herbariaꎬbut they are difficult to assign to
known species or to describe as new because of the lack
of reproductive partsꎬespecially the flowers. Furthermoreꎬ
specimens in Vietnam are mostly collected by local ethno ̄
botanists who only focus on the use of the speciesꎬbut o ̄
verlook the need of complete vouchers for proper identifi ̄
cation. Numerous recent studies of the genus Aristolochia
and other seed plants indicated that the floras of southern

China and northern Vietnam are in close relationship due
to identical similarities in climatic and floristic conditions
(Do et alꎬ2013ꎻ Fu et alꎬ2013ꎻ Lu et alꎬ2014ꎻ Do et alꎬ
2015). Thus many known Aristolochia species from China
may be also found in Vietnam.
Liang (1975) primarily described A. impressinervis
based on a collection made by Hwang Shangling from

China. Recentlyꎬ while working on Aristolochia speci ̄
mens at herbaria worldwide (CPNPꎬHNꎬHNUꎬIBKꎬKꎬ
KUNꎬLꎬMOꎬNIMMꎬPꎬVNMꎬVNMN) for revising of
the genus Aristolochia from Indo ̄Chinese region as well
as consultation of literature (Phuphathanaphongꎬ1987ꎻ
Phamꎬ2000ꎻ Hwangꎬ2003ꎻ Nguyenꎬ2003)ꎬwe found
out A. impressinervis as new record for the flora of Viet ̄
nam. The specimens at Vietnamese herbaria were proba ̄
bly misidentified as A. pierrei L. This species is however
distinguishable from the latter as showed in the discus ̄
sion and Table 1.

Distribution: SE CHINA (Guangxi) and new to
VIETNAM (Cao BangꎬQuàng Ninh).
Notes: Aristolochia impressinervis is morphological
homogeneous. Only slight variation in the shape and size
of leavesꎬfruit of the populations occur in Vietnam com ̄
pared to the type specimens in China.
A. impressinervis is mophologically similar to A.
pierrei L. (reported from Laos and Thailand) by sharing
the shape and size of leaves (ovate ̄lanceolata to lanceo ̄
lata laminaꎬ9-14 cm longꎬ2-5 cm wide). HoweverꎬA.
impressinervis clearly differs from the latter by the follow ̄
ing characters of venation on the adaxial surface (gla ̄
brous and obscure vs. pubescent and visible)ꎬveinlet on
the abaxial surface (closely reticulate vs. loosely reticu ̄
late)ꎬbracteole (sessile vs. stipe)ꎬtube (slightly curved
at base vs. rectilinear)ꎬlimb (ligulate ̄shapedꎬdark ̄pur ̄
ple vs. oblong ̄shapedꎬ purplish ̄brown)ꎬ seeds ( non ̄
wingedꎬboth surfaces smooth vs. wingedꎬboth surfaces
verrucose) (Table 1).
These morphological similarities made Vietnamese
botanists confuse A. impressinervis with A. pierrei. For in ̄
stanceꎬthe specimen L. Averyanov et al. VH 4947 (HNꎬ
MO) (Figure 1) that was misidentified as A. pierrei.
Furthermoreꎬthe specimen L. Averyanov et al. VH 4947
that was collected in Cao Bang prov. in north eastern
Vietnam where borders to the type locality of A. im ̄
pressinervis. Whereas A. pierrei has still known in South
Laos and extending to southwestern Thailand. Based on
observation of the herbarium specimens as well as recent
fieldworks the author has not ever seen any specimens of
A. pierrei occurring in Vietnam and South China. It
means that A. pierrei has still been restricted to Laos and
Thailandꎬnot yet reached to the north. Thusꎬthe speci ̄
men L. Averyanov et al. VH 4947 from Vietnam have to
be identified correctly as A. impressinervis.
