Abstract:Theinhibitoryefectsoffourlignocelulosedegradationproductsandethanolonglucoseandxylose
fermentationbyKluyveromycesmarxianus1727werestudiedinbatchcultures.Toxiccompoundswereaddedin
variableconcentrations,andsubsequentinhibitionsongrowthandethanolproductionweretested.Theacetic
acidandtheformicacidwereshowntobestronginhibitorsofbothglucoseandxylosefermentationwhenthey
wereaddedtotheculturemediaatconcentrationsof50g/Land10g/L,respectively.Furfuraland
5hydroxylmethylfurfuralataconcentrationof1g/Ldidnotafectglucosefermentation,andcouldbe
changedintorelativelylowtoxicsubstances.Theinhibitionof5hydroxylmethylfurfuralwasseriousonxylose
fermentationthanfurfuralduetothetransformationofthe5hydroxylmethylslowerthanthatoffurfural.Etha
nolwasalsoshowntobestronginhibitorsofxylosefermentation,whentheethanolconcentrationwasmore
than20g/L,biomassandxylosetransformationeficiencieswere44% and70% ofthecontrol.
