Abstract:The Miocene flora in Shanwang was first described by Hu and Chaney in 1940. Revisions on the flora were partly carried out by R.W. Brown in 1946, and WGCPC in 1978. Some taxa were added into this flora by Li (1981) and Tao(1992). Shanwang flora as now known is made up
dominantly of angiosperms. In addition to typical temperate families such as Betulaeeae, Aceraceae,Ulmaceae, Fagaceae, Salicaceae, Tiliaceae, etc., the Shanwang flora also contains some subtropical evergreen trees, i.e. Cinnamomum (Lauraceae), Ficus (Moraceae), and Eriobotrya (Rosaceae) etc. The paleoclimate inferred from Shanwang flora and its associated fauna is warm temperate to subtropical. Recent investigations provide some new data into Shanwang flora. A new genus of winged fruits Chaneya, new species of Zelkova and Quercus respectively are established. The discovery of Eucommia cf ulmoides adds a new taxon to Shanwang flora.
